Some Important FAQs Asked by Patients
Do I need a referral for physiotherapy and sports?
At Aquarius Physiotherapy Yaletown, our clients do not need a referral from a specialist to see a Vancouver Physiotherapy Servicessince they also are primary health practitioners. You might not even need a referral if you are covered by MSP, WCB, or ICBC. However, we still suggest that you call or email us beforehand to see whether you need a referral or not. It might be important for the reimbursement of your physiological therapy.
What to expect for your first visit
During your first appointment with Vancouver Physiotherapy Services, you can expect that your therapist will ask you some questions about your past medical history, areas of concern, information about how an injury occurred, and other relevant details such as current work conditions, exercise habits, overall health, family history, etc. By doing this, your physiotherapist will have the ability to take a look at your holistic history and focus on educating you on why you may be experiencing pain and dysfunction in your daily life. Physical examinations and tests will follow, and you will leave your initial assessment with some form of appropriate treatment. This portion of the appointment is important for confirming the initial diagnosis and identifying which components are involved in the injury and to what extent the damage lies. Accurate identification of which parts of the body are involved, whether it be the muscle, cartilage, bone, or nerve, will allow you to have a quicker recovery time overall.
What do I need before my first visit?
Please come in around 10 minutes prior to the start of your first appointment so that you can find the clinic and fill out some relevant paperwork without cutting into your allotted appointment time. Do not hesitate to ask questions about Vancouver Physiotherapy Services.
Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move such as tank tops/t-shirts for upper body injuries that require palpating of the upper trunk and limbs. You should wear shorts for hip, knee, and lower back injuries. We do provide shorts and gowns for patients to change into if necessary.
What should I bring to my first ICBC/WCB treatment?
Your BC Care Card and ICBC/WCB claim number will be needed if you are in need of Vancouver Physiotherapy Services. You may not have to get a doctor’s referral for your initial block of treatment. Our helpful reception staff will tell you about the end of a therapy block and whether a referral is needed to continue with Vancouver Physiotherapy Services.
How much will my appointment with a physiotherapist cost?
Please contact us at (604) 998-4923 or via our website for full information and fee schedule. We devote 100% of your expected time to you at the Aquarius Physiotherapy Clinic. We won’t leave you on an ultrasound machine or patients with a double book, unlike other clinics. The fee structure is based on the British Columbia Physiotherapy Association’s recommended fee recommendations and varies depending on the level of ability and seniority. Please do not hesitate to call us at (604) 998-4923 if you have any concerns about our fees or future ICBC or WCB coverage.
What is the cancellation policy for physiotherapy and sports?
Your time with our Vancouver Physiotherapy Services is strictly reserved for you. If you need an appointment reset, a warning is required 24 hours in advance. If you do not provide a cancellation warning in time, there will be a cancellation charge for the missed time.
What is manual therapy?
A therapist trained in manual therapy will be able to use a variety of palpation techniques to assess the issue. They will be able to identify whether a joint is restricted, hypermobile, spastic, arthritic, or bound by scar tissue. This part of the physical assessment requires the most extensive amount of training and experience in order to master because every situation has a different method of treatment. For example, in the case of a restricted joint, exercises must focus on challenging the range of motion and holding stretched in order to promote joint capsule compensation. In contrast, the treatment of an unstable joint must require exercises that focus on enhancing joint stability and limiting range of motion.
What is intramuscular stimulation (IMS)?
IMS is a dry needling technique that utilizes acupuncture needles to release both short and tender muscles from neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction. Therapists that practise this technique have taken extensive courses and are fully certified about when this technique may be effective on patients and how to practice needling safely. This treatment was first developed by Dr. Chan Gunn (C.M., O.B.C., M.D., PhD.), and bridges the gap between traditional Chinese acupuncture and western medicine. Do not hesitate to ask about Vancouver Physiotherapy Services.
How does IMS work?
Oftentimes the nerves throughout our bodies have the tendency to get hypersensitive from either trauma or repetitive strain. When the nerves are irritated, they provide abnormal connections to the muscles, which can cause them to be hyper-reactive and short. Patients with this issue will experience tightness and stiffness in the body, which can be a very uncomfortable symptom.
A fine needle will be inserted into the area of concern and the muscle will respond by grasping it and creating a cramping sensation. By manipulating the muscle in this way, there will be a release of endorphins, which ultimately creates a feeling of relaxation. The small hole that the needle creates within the muscle body will also help to activate the body’s natural healing process and reduce tension and stress. In turn, this will decrease the pressure that is placed on the joints, discs, and nerves surrounding the muscle.
Moreover, IMS allows the muscles and nerves to reorganize in a more regular manner. An initial assessment made by a certified Gun IMS practitioner would be able to determine abnormalities that traditional diagnostic tests such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI’s are not able to see. Ask our expert Vancouver Physiotherapy Services if IMS is for you.
What conditions does IMS treat?
IMS has the potential to benefit a wide range of conditions such as:
- headaches and tension
- whiplash and neck pain
- back pain (upper, middle, low)
- frozen shoulder and rotator cuff tendinopathy
- tennis elbow
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- sciatica and piriformis syndrome
- leg numbness and stiffness
- plantar fasciitis
- repetitive strain injuries
If you are suffering from one of these conditions, do not hesitate to ask questions about Vancouver Physiotherapy Services.
Will the IMS treatment hurt?
The amount of pain that a patient might experience depends on both pain tolerance as well as the state of the muscle that is being treated. Initial needle insertion will only feel like a small prick. If the patient has hypersensitive muscles, they might experience muscle cramping, aching, or even grasping. These symptoms can be described ranging from a simple pressure point to a Charlie Horse. After the treatment, the patient might be sore for a few days until the pain eventually improves. We recommend using mild heat and resting in order to help manage most-IMS related soreness. Vancouver Physiotherapy Services might be the solution for you.

We are open from 7 am to 7 pm Monday to Friday and from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturdays.
Can I reach my physiotherapists by email?
